The Jomsom Trek is a very popular trek, this classic tea-house trek visits some of the best guest houses in Nepal. You will walk through the famous George craved by the kali Gandaki River, which carries water from the Tibetan plateau to eventually join the Ganges in India.
Following the ancient trading route from India to Tibet up the Kali Gandaki valley starting from the roadhead near Pokhara and finishing at the pilgrimage site of Muktinath. Fossilized ammonites, known locally as shaligrams are found all along the upper reaches of kali Gandaki. To Hindus, Muktinath is sacred as the place of salvation. They believe that to wash in the waters here guarantees salvation after their death. The Hindu god, Brahma, is thought to have lit the eternal flames that are kept burning at Muktinath. To Buddhists it is a place that the great sage guru Rinpoche meditated at.
You will experience the culture of the lowland villages to the splendour of the high Himalaya with spectacular views of the two Himalayan giants, Annapurna and Dhaulagiri.
The customs and dress of the local people give the traveller a unique insight into their way of life and religion. The religions seen here range from Hinduism in the lower parts to the Tibetan style Buddhism as you travel further north.

In Muktinath in early September you will be able to see one of Nepal’s unique festivals, the annual Tibetan horse races known as Yartung, amazing horsemanship accompanies a great celebration here at this time, definitely worth seeing if you are there at the right time.
At Lete khola you will enter the tranquil Pine forests, here the villages take on a different appearance. The design of the houses are unique to this area. They are designed to to give protection from the strong winds that are caused by differences in atmospheric pressure between the Tibetan plateau and the lower reaches of the valley. Stone flagged streets and the flat roofed houses with a central courtyard make it an attractive spot to spend a day relaxing.
Jomsom's airport offers a quick entry or exit to the valley with regular daily flights from Pokhara. No flights can arrive or depart from Jomsom after 11 am due to the windy conditions.
Jomsom is also a great place to use as a base for exploring the upper part of the kali Gandaki.
